A real memory

On being sent to bed without supper, and a grandmother who had other ideas

I opened the window and there to my surprise was Grandma below with her long cane fishing rod with something tied to the end of it. Much to my delight I discovered it was some dinner for me.

Love always, Mum
A real memory

On finding a perfect hideaway as a girl

I cleaned up the old chook pen, set up my table and chairs and books, and made it my very own library. Sometimes I’d climb into the frangipani tree and perch there with my book happily reading in the sunshine.

Love, Mum

Your parents lived a whole life before you came along.

You know them, and yet you don’t. Not what your dad dreamed of being, or who first broke your mum’s heart. Dear To You asks, one gentle question at a time.

So, what would you ask first?

Chapter IIIReal stories

The things they remember.

A real memory

On the best part of a day at the beach

There was nothing better than bright red beetroot juice dripping down my arms as I sat there devouring my lunch.

Mum x
A real memory

On a favourite family meal growing up

In the 1950s chicken was a treat. There was no KFC in those days. Chicken was a treat and was generally only eaten on special occasions such as Christmas or on a birthday if you were lucky.

Dad
A real memory

On expectations, and finally letting go

After so many years, I acknowledged I didn’t have to please him or the Church any more, and I felt a weight had lifted from my shoulders.

Love, Mum x

Chapter VIWhy Dear To You

It started with my own parents.

Jake, Founder, Dear To You
Dear To You
A note from the founder

I grew up thinking I knew my parents pretty well. A few months into asking them one question a week, I realised I’d barely scratched the surface.

Dad’s boarding school days. His childhood on the coast, and the way he learnt to fish. Mum’s school holiday rituals and the weekly trip to the shops. The small, significant details of lives I thought I already knew.

I built Dear To You so more families get to have those conversations, without waiting for the right moment or learning a new app. One question every Sunday, and a book at the end to keep.

Chapter VIIIFrequently asked questions

Things worth knowing.

Something else? Send us a message.

What if my parent isn’t great with technology?

That’s exactly who Dear To You is designed for. All they need to do is receive an email and hit reply. No app, no account, no password. If they can send an email, they can do this.

What if they miss a week?

Completely fine. There’s no pressure and no catch-up required. Some parents answer every week; others take things at a slower rhythm. The year continues gently regardless, and the story builds at whatever pace feels right.

Can I see their responses as they come in?

Yes. You’re copied in on every reply throughout the year, so each response arrives in your inbox as it happens and you’re part of the story as it unfolds.

Can they include photos?

Yes. Each week they can upload a photo alongside their written reply: an old family snap, a place they’ve described, or anything that brings the story to life. Photos are woven into the final book alongside their words.

Can I give this as a gift right now, or choose when it starts?

Both. Every plan includes instant digital delivery, so you can give it today. After checkout you choose the Sunday their first question arrives, so you can line it up with a birthday, Mother’s or Father’s Day, or Christmas.

How is the hardcover book made?

After 52 weeks we professionally design and typeset a hardcover book from all of their responses. It’s printed on premium paper and bound as a quality hardcover: a proper heirloom, not a pamphlet.

Is this available worldwide?

Yes. We ship anywhere in the world, with no hidden shipping charges on print plans.

Ask them this week.

One question. Every Sunday. Then a book that lasts forever.
